The Great Pacific Garbage patch is a collection or marine litter trapped in a gyre in the central North Pacific Ocean about twice the size of Texas. An estimated 80% of the garbage comes from land-based sources, and 20% from
ships. The plastic debris is trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre and remains there in a vortex. There have been several organizations launched to attempt to cleanup what has been deemed as “the world’s largest dump”, but some fear it’s nearly an impossible feat. The accumulation of garbage is not only disgusting, but a danger; both to marine life, and to us.
“‘In the central North Pacific Gyre, pieces of plastic outweigh surface zooplankton by a factor of 6 to 1,’ according to a report based
on Charles Moore’s research. ‘Ninety percent of Laysan albatross chick carcasses and regurgitated stomach contents contain plastics. Fish and seabirds mistake plastic for food. Plastic debris releases chemical additives and plasticizers into the ocean. Plastic also adsorbs hydrophobic pollutants like PCBs and pesticides like DDT. These pollutants bioaccumulate in the tissues of marine organisms, biomagnify up the food chain, and find their way into the foods we eat.’”
We implore you to do some research, and support the organizations that are attempting to clean it up and call it to the general public’s attention. Thanks for reading.
Just too sad that we are capable of doing this to our earth.
This is a proof that people never want to be responsible of what they are doing are threatening their own world…
Really no comments? Nobody has anything to say about this? Really? That’s pathetic that nobody has anything to say about this. Honestly 100% pathetic.
as opposed to just bitching and not saying anything substantial yourself? lol
All ppl are talking and wondering about Smoking and alcohol, nobody does a shit about the sea. x/
I LUUV U EARTH!
I’m gonna make a articel about this! 8)
I venture to guess that 90% of the trash is stuff that never should have been manufactured. Are you buying it? water/soda/milk/detergent/antifreeze/juice in plastic bottles? batteries in a plastic bubble?
Even as recently as 50 years ago, trash was paper (if you did not light the fire with it), old leather shoes that would eventually rot, glass bottles that broke on the way back to be washed and refilled.
Huge industries exist to make all this totally unnecessary crap. STOP BUYING IT>
Honestly, the people of this planet are going to get what they deserve. All they want to do is make money and not take care of the Garden of Eden we were once given. The oil spill and the plastic gyres are going to grow and grow until we live on Wall-E’s world. Ye reap what ye sow. In the end, man polluted the heavens and the earth…
Aggred with shady!!(:
Everyone is responsible, you cant say you dont ever buy plastic because its on everything and one way or another you contribute.
The waste has to go somewhere unfortunetely and 6 billion people arent going to just stop using plastic instantly. It needs a huge campaign. It is sad, it will stop when we run out of oil to make plastic…
its just awful how people treat the enviorment ! its so horrible and kids swim in the ocean and we eat fish as well.
the people making this mess will not pay for it.
This we leave to our children!
I am amazed that we think we are an advanced species…and yet we build and use “temporary” things using permanent materials.
And I am amazed that I did not know about this waste site before today; the date, September 14, 2010. Amazing.
Not only that but the amazment and dissapointment continue when I think about the fact that I have never seen anything about it on TV nor have I read about it nor do I know of anyone who knows about this other than those on this site and the other sites I have looked up regarding this issue today.
We have the opportunity to use nature to its maximum health and life supporting potential. Earth and sun and water create the finest foods and can do so for very little cost.
We have the chance to live lives in the fulfillment of our own healthiest potential and it comes down to each and every decision each of us makes in our own lives in every moment throughout the days and nights of our lives.
What system creates these things? What system of doing things creates food plant seeds that do not reproduce themselves due to genetic engineering? What system focuses on a created system of values which focuses on something other than that which is offered us by nature itself?
I have looked and I have found that in nature there is an owners manual to the art of being. By listening and obeying we can have life. By separating ourselves we are left to our own wanderings and devices…and we are left to live and die within the resultant creations…such as this dump among many other similar environs.
Look first inside yourself before pointing to the problems outside. Repair your own garden. Clean it of the weeds that have been planted there against your will and often without your knowing and you will find that the fruits of your creation will spread the seeds of life itself. Until that time…meaning until we all do this we will continue to create great surprises like this Pacific Dump.

It’s not going to make any difference now… we’re done. If the whole world could join forces, no, WOULD join forces to clean up the garbage patch, or at least try to clean it up, how about this: Gather up all the trawlers, freighters, war ships, carriers, love boats, dingys, shrimpers, gunboats, luxury liners, Coast Guard Cutters, PT boats, and whatever else we can scrape up, go out there and line them all up in a row, cast their nets, drop their anchors, and let the currents of the gyre bring the plastic into the nets. Start by gathering the biggest stuff first, then gradually reduce the size of the sieves until all but the microscopic debris remains. Yes, I realize that copious amounts of marine life would be lost, but what the fuck? We’re going to lose them anyway… Mankind, you are a sick lot – and if I see mushroom clouds in the distance tomorrow, I’ll leap for joy! Bunch of stupid bastards… you can fuck up a steel ball with a sponge – a plastic coated sponge, that is. Hey, cockroaches! Get ready! You’re the next contestants on the Spice Of Life! sigh…..Greed 3 Technology 0
We traded our species for a goddamned dollar…………………
my anger too is intense too intense to simply write however i do believe in hope for the future i simply must if for no other reason than for my children and theirs it is true that with current clean-up tech we can barely scratch the surface of this mass but with need comes invention and with enough exposure to this crime against everyone and everything on this planet we can create the need spread the word please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i too am angered by this but in the absence of current hope to fix this we must make hope! current clean-up tech is in no way able to handle these problems but with need comes invention we must create a need by forwarding this knowledge to everyone we can and with enough public outcry i believe we will find a way spread the word poeple please!!!!!!
This is the problem that the world should be undertaking, not the global warming nonsense. So sad to see this with such little press. The old saying of “follow the money” applies here. There is no money or redistribution of money involved in the clean up of this catastrophe, yet the $$$ and redistr. of $$$ is all in the global warming crap. Just goes to show also that if those in power really care about the earth, this would garner some attention. Hypocrites all of them.
